SCULPTURE TUTORIAL - part 2

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
PREPARATIONS

I begin my work by picking a subject and searching the internet for references - promotional photos, wallpapers, screen-captures and so on. It is best to find clear high resolution photos from various angles (see the top row of the photographs). Pay attention to facial expressions. It is important to choose references that are consistent with one another. Even a slight smile changes the curves of cheeks and nose considerably.

Try to pick a variety of photographs. It helps you in locating the more minute features of the face, some of which can be clearly seen only under specific angle and lighting. Like the bone structure of the cheeks.

Unconscious characters in movies can be very useful :) because the angle of the camera usually shows them from below so that one can clearly see the profile of their lips and forehead as well as the shape of nostrils.

Before you proceed check how symmetric the face really is. It is best to find a photograph from straight ahead (like a mug shot). Ears are good indicators of relative position of the head and the camera.

-> yaw - both ears should be wholly visible (aside from any hair that might be in the way)
-> pitch - the upper base of ears should be at level with eyes
-> roll - check whether both pupils are on the same level - if not, simply rotate the image
(you can also set nose and the tip of chin as vertical axis)

Once the head is nicely centered try mirroring it (see lower left photos) and note all the asymmetric irregularities which human eye normally tends to ignore and keep them in mind. It can be useful to highlight the irregularities (see lower right photo) on a picture and save it in case you'll need to refresh your memory later as you progress with your work.
